Epaulettes bear some resemblance to the shoulder pteruges of ancient Roman navy costumes. Even so their immediate origin lies while in the bunches of ribbons worn within the shoulders of armed forces coats at the end of the seventeenth century, which were partly attractive and partly meant to reduce shoulder belts from slipping.Bibs: Anti-abrasion
